Description
Kazeosame Hachimangu (風治八幡宮) is a Shinto shrine in Uo-machi, Tagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, a Hachiman shrine of former Chikuzen Province, Tagawa District, that served as the principal guardian shrine of the Tagawa region in the Chikuhō coalfield area. The name "Kazeosame" (wind-quelling) reflects its tradition as a guardian against wind and water disasters. The principal kami are Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and Tamayori-hime-no-Mikoto, deriving from Usa Jingu of the Hachiman cult, with the inclusion of Tamayori-hime linking the shrine to the neighbouring Hikosan Jingu cult of Shugendo. According to shrine tradition, the foundation derives from Empress Jingu's return from the Korean campaign, when she pacified the storm in this area. The Kawatari Shinko Festival in May, in which mikoshi cross the Hikosan River, is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukuoka.
