Description
Kifune Shrine, located in Kuramakibune-cho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, is the head shrine of about 450 Kifune branch shrines nationwide and the principal water shrine of the realm. It is recorded in the Engishiki Jinmyocho of Yamashiro Province as Kifune Shrine, a Myojin Taisha. The honsha enshrines Takaokami-no-Kami, while the okumiya enshrines Kuraokami-no-Kami; both are recorded in the upper book of the Kojiki as kami who arose from the blood dripping from the sword with which Izanagi cut down Kagutsuchi-no-Kami. The Yui-no-Yashiro enshrines Iwanaga-hime, recorded in the Kojiki as the elder sister of Konohanasakuya-hime. Shrine tradition relates that Tamayori-hime, mother of Jinmu Tenno, sailed up the Yodo, Kamo, and Kifune rivers in a yellow boat and disembarked at the okumiya to enshrine the water deity. Heian court rites of praying for rain or its cessation centered on this shrine.
