Description

Kagoshima Jingu (鹿児島神宮) is a Shinto shrine in Hayato-cho Uchi, Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, the first-ranked shrine of the former Osumi Province, identified with the Myojin-Taisha listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) for Osumi Province, Kuwabara District. The principal kami are Amatsuhitaka-Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto (the Mountain-Luck deity, Hoori) and Toyotama-hime-no-Mikoto, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) as the parents of Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, father of Emperor Jimmu. Auxiliary kami include Emperor Chuai, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Ojin, integrating the Sea-Luck and Mountain-Luck myth with the Hachiman tradition. The main hall (1756) is an Important Cultural Property, and the Hatsu-uma festival in February, with bell-bedecked horses and dance troupes processing through the precincts, is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
